Business Cooling Towers Cooling tower is a heat denial device. This device emits waste heat to the atmosphere. It allows a small portion of the water to be evaporated into a moving air stream. This provides significant cooling to the rest of the water stream. The heat from the water stream transmitted to the air stream increases the atmospheric temperature and its relative humidity to 100%, and this air is discharged to the atmosphere. The towers can use either the evaporation of water to remove process heat and cool the working fluid to wet-bulb air temperature or, in the case of closed circuit dry cooling towers, can use air to cool the working fluid to dry-bulb air temperature. The cooling potential of a wet surface is much better when .pared to a dry one. Direct (open circuit) and indirect (closed circuit) are the two basic types of heat rejection equipment. An open circuit cooling tower is a walled structure with various means to distribute the warm water fed to it over a labyrinth-like packing or fill. The fill offers an enormously expanded air-water interface for heating of the air and evaporation to take place. The water is cooled as it slopes through the fill by gravity while in direct contact with air that flows over it. The cooled water is then accumulated in a cold water basin below the fill from where it is pumped back through the process to absorb more heat. The heated air is discharged to prevent it from being drawn back into the cooling tower. A closed circuit cooling tower does not allow direct contact of the air and the fluid being cooled. The indirect cooling tower includes two separate fluid circuits. In one circuit water is re-circulated outside the second circuit, which is the tube bundle. Air is extracted through the recirculating water cascading over the outside of the hot tubes, offering evaporative cooling similar to an open cooling tower. Based on the movement of the fluids, cooling towers can be classified into counter-flow and cross-flow. In counter-flow, air travels upward through tube bundles, opposite to the downward motion of the water. In cross-flow, air moves perpendicular to the water which moves downward. Cooling towers are also characterized by the means by which air is moved: mechanical-draft cooling towers, natural-draft cooling towers and fan-assisted natural-draft cooling tower. Operation: Generally, heat transfers from the internal fluid circuit, through the tube walls of the coils, to the external circuit and then by heating of the air and vaporization of some of the water, to the atmosphere.
